I have been unemployed for 8 months, am 57 years old, and have recently filed for disability, based upon the suggestions of 3 different doctors. I live in northern central Texas.
I recently cancelled my cell phone as it was an expense I could no longer afford. I just read that “any charged cell phone can call 911″ and would like to know if it is a factual statement. The comment stated that people do not have to have a cell phone service [e.g. no verizon, sprint, at&t or the like - no service provider whatsoever].
911 is really the only need I have for a cell phone. I can get by with my home phone for all other issues, as I have a DSL internet line and have a VOIP home phone – thus cutting my phone bills by over 65percent. I pay less for my VOIP and DSL than I did for a simple Sprint cell phone package [seriously, my phone is so old it does not even take pictures, and I have never texted on it, it is totally black and white no frills].
If anyone knows for sure about the 911 availability, I would greatly appreciate a response, either affirming or denying the comment I read. Thanks so much!
Any previously activated phone should be able to call 911. Obviously, this won’t work where there is no cell signal, but otherwise it should work even if the phone is not currently active with service.
thank you very much, I now feel safe! I can charge my home phone at night, and keep the cell with me when I sleep and when I drive. I appreciate your time. Have a great 2011
